Guitar
Advanced Lessons
You have now entered the advanced guitar lessons. In this part of the site you are required to already be capable of doing the beginners lessons. This isn't amazingly advanced at all. You just need to be more capable at guitar than beginners. The beginners to advanced is a big step, but go ahead and try it out!
Improvising and Solos
There are 5 different positions of pentatonic scale, which can be put in any key. These are the 5 different positions of the pentatonic scale of G:
1)
e]---------------------3-6-|
B]-----------------3-6-----|
G]-------------3-5---------|
D]---------3-5-------------|
A]-----3-5-----------------|
E]-3-6---------------------|
2)
e]---------------------5-8-|
B]-----------------6-8-----|
G]-------------5-7---------|
D]---------5-8-------------|
A]-----5-8-----------------|
E]-6-8---------------------|
3)
e]--------------------------8-10-|
B]---------------------8-11------|
G]----------------7-10-----------|
D]-----------8-10----------------|
A]------8-10---------------------|
E]-8-10--------------------------|
4)
e]-------------------------------10-13-|
B]-------------------------11-13-------|
G]-------------------10-12-------------|
D]-------------10-12-------------------|
A]-------10-13-------------------------|
E]-10-13-------------------------------|
5)
e]-------------------------------13-15-|
B]-------------------------13-15-------|
G]-------------------12-15-------------|
D]-------------12-15-------------------|
A]-------13-15-------------------------|
E]-13-15-------------------------------|
You can improvise and make solos using these 5 scales. All you have to do is add vibratos, bends, hammer ons, pull offs and slides. You can even do some at the same time, for example, you can bend and do a vibrato at the same time.
Here are new words for you and their new signs to add to your GUITAR DICTIONARY:
Vibrato - Making the sound of a not shake (put it in a sot of sound equilibrium) twisting your wrist while holding tight onto a string. It makes the sound vibrate.
Bends - When You Bend a string. This makes the pitch rise and so the sound becomes higher. You do this by using three of your fingers to bend a string at a fret and use make your thumb hang over the fingerboard for extra force.
Hammer On - This is when play a note and hammer your finger hard onto another note, changing the pitch.
Pull of - The opposite of a hammer on. You pull your funger off the fret and as you pull it off, you pluck the string with the finger to make the sound last.
Slide - This is when you play a note on the guitar and slide you finger up or down the board a few frets so that the pitch changes.
Signs:
Vibrato - v (The more v's you put, the more vibrato you have to put into the playing.)
Bend - b. You have to bend from one fret to the NOTE of another. You can bend up or bend down (you can only bend down when the string has already been bent up and is still in that position.) so an example is -13b15-. In this, you are bending the 13th fret until the pitch is the same as the 15th fret.
Hammer on - h. You hammer on from a fret to a fret, so an example of a hammer on is -5h7-.
Pull off - p. You have to pull off from a fret to a fret, so an example of a pull off is -7p5-.
Slide - / You can slide up or down the frets. An example of sliding up is -13/15- and an example of sliding down is -13/11-.
If you got to websites where you can find tabs (see the "Cool Links" page for this), then you will find these symbols very often.
Now that you know the tabs and know vaguely how to improvise i will give you a random example (without even looking at my guitar!):
e]--------------------------15-------------------17b19vvvv----------------
B]---15b17vv-------12-15b17----15b17-----------------------------------12-
G]-----------12/14-----------------------------------------------12b13----
D]------------------------------------------------------------------------
A]-----------------------------------------15p12-----------10/12----------
E]-0---------------------------------12h15--------------------------------

In this improvisation, I used the pentatonic scales of E. You may not notice this at first but by looking and this solo, try playing it, first, and then figuring out the pentatonic scale of E from it. You will notice that It has the same fingering as the scale of G (which I showed you at the top), but is moved down 3 frets. I will give you the first pentatonic scale of E, then you can figure out the rest for practice.
e]---------------------0-3-|
B]-----------------0-3-----|
G]-------------0-2---------|
D]---------0-2-------------|
A]-----0-2-----------------|
E]-0-3---------------------|
